For a nine-month-old baby, everything is fascinating: your shoes, the dog's bowl, a hairbrush... he has so many things to explore. If you put all the safe pans, wooden spoons and sieves in one low kitchen cupboard, he will enjoy pulling them out, if not putting them back again. You can secure the other cupboards with child-resistant locks as well as keeping dangerous items well out of reach (some babies are better than safe-crackers when it comes to cupboard locks). Once he has hold of something new, there are many experiments you can do: does it roll? Does it make a noise? Can he bang it against something else? If you can encourage your little scientist while keeping him out of harm's way, you will promote his confidence and independence as well as his widening knowledge.
